Who Can Benefit from Sedation?

Using sedation, we can help you enjoy mental and physical relaxation during your dental procedure. Over the years, we’ve found that no matter how anxious a patient is, they can benefit from sedation and its calming effects.

When we combine sedation methods with a local anesthetic before your procedure, you’ll find that you can undergo oral surgery or other procedures with virtually no pain or discomfort.

At Flint River Dental, in Huntsville, AL, we also feel strongly that you don’t need to be a highly anxious patient for sedation to be effective. Sedation is also appropriate in cases where a patient requires multiple procedures and may have trouble sitting for long periods of time. Other patients suffer with TMJ pain that causes stress when they need to keep their mouths open for extended periods of time. In all these cases, oral sedation relaxes the muscles in the mouth enough to make treatment easier and more efficient.

What Types of Sedation Do You Offer?

Oral sedation is an excellent way to calm your nerves before your procedure. We’ll prescribe a sedative for you to take about an hour before your appointment to help you relax even before you get to our office. Dr. Darby will administer additional medication after your arrival to make sure you’re completely comfortable.

During treatment, you will feel very calm but remain conscious so that you are able to express your concerns and answer our questions. Your condition will be monitored continuously throughout your procedure.

While oral sedation is safe and effective, you may want a milder form of sedation. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) has been used safely since the mid 1800s and has helped millions get the anxiety relief they need. An advantage of nitrous oxide sedation is that you won’t feel any lingering effects after treatment so you won’t need a driver to take you home.
